“The Gay Essentials” is one of the clearest examples of Andy Warhol’s influence on Danny’s work. In Andy Warhol’s works, such as “Campbell’s Soup Cans” and “Brillo Boxes,” he took household staples of the average American home and turned them into artworks. Playing off this concept, Danny photographed objects around his home that he considered to be household staples in the average gay home (i.e. essentials), and turned them into artworks. What sets these images apart, is that outside of the average gay home, many people may not even know that these objects exist. This art is a subtle nod to every gay person who sees it, and unassuming artwork to those who are not lucky enough to be a part of the LGBTQIA community, it’s culture and it’s many open secrets.
